Schisandra chinensis, called Wu Wei Zi in China, is an Asian medicinal plant that is used especially in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine. The schisandra berries, but also the seeds and leaves are valued and widely used because of their strengthening and toning effect. The plant contains the active ingredient schisandrin. Schisandra is one of the adaptogenic plants that help to adapt mentally and physically to extreme challenges. Traditionally in Asian medicine, Shsandra is used in stress-related fatigue to strengthen the nervous system, in sleep disorders, depression, as protection and detoxification for the liver, and in vision problems such as night blindness. It increases endurance during strenuous activity and helps to cope better under extreme conditions.
