Organic Ashwagandha, Withania somnifera


Ashwagandha, also known as winter cherry, grows in India and holds the same position in Ayurveda as ginseng does in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Like ginseng, it is a generally strengthening plant, a so-called adaptogenic plant, which helps people adapt mentally and physically to extreme situations. It strengthens the nervous system, improves memory, digestion, blood circulation, respiration, tissue regeneration, and increases vitality. As a nerve tonic and sedative, it is also helpful for dizziness, anxiety, pain, stress, and tremors. Ashwagandha balances emotions, has a calming effect, and promotes deep sleep.

Ashwagandha is also said to have aphrodisiac properties and to prolong erections. It is also used after surgery to improve regeneration, partly due to its anti-inflammatory properties. This medicinal herb has a blood-purifying effect, meaning it intensifies the excretion of metabolic waste products and uric acid by the kidneys, thereby reducing edema. It also has a positive effect on the heart, especially in cases of cardiac arrhythmia. It should be used in a course of treatment and not over an extended period, in moderate doses.

Dosage: 1 teaspoon daily. In cases of increased stress, take 1 teaspoon twice a day, ideally about 15 minutes before meals for optimal absorption. The powder can also be mixed into other foods.
